Online-Measurement of OTR, CTR and RQ for shake flasks cultivations
Kuhner TOM measures the oxygen and carbon dioxide transfer rate (OTR), carbon dioxide transfer rate (CTR) and the respiratory quotient (RQ) online in up to 16 independent shake flasks simultaneously.
Kühner TOM thus enables a better understanding of the cultivation processes and efficient and rational process development.
Kuhner TOM can be installed in any Kühner shaking incubator. Online measurement of transfer rates is possible for all common piston types and sizes as well as for disposable shake flasks.

Kuhner TOM has a modular design
and allows the user to carry out parallel online measurement for 4, 8, 12 or 16 shake flasks. Since Kuhner TOM is installed above the shaking tab, the measuring device in the shaking incubator does not take up any space for shake flasks.
In cell lculture and microbial applications, TOM is used for:
- Monitoring of previous crops
- Determination of cell-specific O2 consumption ➔ Scale-up
- Cell line development, media development, process development
- Knowledge of the cultivation process for optimal sampling, harvesting or rearrangement
FlexCap – one cap for all types of flasks
The FlexCap is a universal silicone adapter cap that allows the use of different sized shake flasks in the Kuhner TOM system to measure oxygen and carbon dioxide transfer rates.
With the FlexCap, cultivations in custom-made special flasks and shake flasks with baffles are also accessible for online measurements with the Kuhner TOM system.
